MACHETE [R] 1hr. 50 min. Action Watch Preview Cast: Danny Trejo, Jessica Alba, Robert De Niro, Michelle Rodriguez, Lindsay Lohan, Cheech Marin, Jeff Fahey, Don Johnson, Steven Seagal. Plot: based on the "fake" trailer in Robert Rodriguez's 2007 "Grindhouse". Machete (Trejo) a renegade former Mexican Federale, roams the streets of Texas after a shakedown from a drug lord (Steven Seagal). Reluctantly, he takes an offer from Benz (Fahey) to assassinate a corrupt Senator (Robert De Niro). Double crossed and on the run Machete braves the odds with the help of Luz (Michelle Rodriguez), a saucy taco slinger, Padre (Cheech Marin) his "holy" brother, and April (Lindsay Lohan) a socialite with a penchant for guns. All while being tracked by Sartana (Jessica Alba), a sexy ICE agent with a special interest in the blade slinger. Showing at: Northrock 14, Warren East, Warren Old Town, Warren West.

TAKERS **½

Takers  was co-written and directed by John Luessenhop.  Watch Preview Cast: Matt Dillon, Paul Walker, Idris Elba, Jay Hernandez, Tip "T.I." Harris, Michael Ealy, Chris Brown, Hayden Christensen.  Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action, a sexual situation/partial nudity and some language. Running time is one hour and fifty-minutes.

A notorious group of criminals (Idris Elba, Paul Walker, T.I., Chris Brown, Hayden Christensen and Michael Ealy) continue to baffle police by pulling off perfectly executed bank robberies. But when they attempt to pull off one last job with more money at stake than ever before, the crew finds their plans interrupted by a hardened detective (Matt Dillon) who is hell-bent on solving the case.

Unfortunately, this is a film whose total is less than the sum of its parts. It has an interesting cast who all do fine work and a plot that's half-way decent, even if you can see where it's going fairly early on. But even though it lives up to its classification as an action film, it wasn't all that exciting to me. It's probably 20 minutes too long and would have been better if tightened. The director chose to use the current style for action films, lots of quick cuts and close ups, resulting in a film you know should be exciting but you really can't tell why. If you intend to see it despite my efforts to discourage you, pick a large theatre with good sound. Theatres/Times.

GET LOW ***½

Aaron Schneider directed this Comedy/Drama. Watch Preview Cast: Robert Duvall, Bill Murray, Sissy Spacek, Lucas Black. Rated PG-13 for some thematic material and brief violent content. Running time is one hour and forty-three minutes.

True story of a hermit who lived for forty years in the Tennessee woods. Felix Bush (Duvall) decides it is time to plan his funeral. Organized by a local undertaker (Bill Murray) and his sidekick (Lucas Black), the funeral will be more party than memorial and an event to which anyone and everyone will be invited and at which Bush will reveal a long kept secret.

At first glance this doesn't look like a terrific film but in fact it's the most impressive I've seen in many months. It captures the mood of the South in the 1920's perfectly (at least I assume it does...that's long before my time). Duvall is outstanding in his role as a hermit who can't forgive himself for what happened in the past and who needs, somehow, to set the record straight. Murray bring humor to his part as a funeral director with a failing businesses, along with several chuckles. The rest of the cast are very, very good. I'm guessing most of you won't go see this but you'll be missing a great film if that's the case. Highly recommended. Theatres/Times.

Worthwhile (or not), 8/27/2010

This week you have your choice between a reissue made even longer than it initially was (Avatar); a new exorcism pic with fairly good national reviews (The Last Exorcism); an action pic with so-so reviews (Takers); and an art film with good reviews, and most enjoyable, I might add (Get Low). Check the MetaCritic site if you want the numerical ratings.

MICMACS **½

Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amélie) directed and co-wrote this Crime/Comedy. Watch Preview Cast: Dany Boon, Andre Dussollier, Nicolas Marie, Jean-Pierre Marielle, Yolande Moreau, Julie Ferrier, Omar Sy, Dominique Pinon, Michel Cremades, Marie-Julie Baup. Rated R for some sexuality and brief violence. Running time is one hour and forty-five minutes.

  

A man (Boon) is hit by a stray bullet in a freak drive-by shooting incident. When he gets out of the hospital without a job or any money, he falls in with an ex-con who lives in a scrap dump and makes plans to get revenge on those responsible.

The original French title translates as ‘Non-stop madness’, which is a lot more explanatory than the American title, especially for those of us who don't speak French. The film is in French with English subtitles but that turns out to be no real problem as the visual dialogue is much more important than the spoken. In fact, I suspect you could watch this with no sound at all and still have a good idea of what's going on. If you're a fan of films by Chaplin or Keaton, you'll be right at home with this whimsical tale of retribution, which is much more a comedy than crime caper. I don't imagine this will find much of an audience here so if this sounds like something you might like, I wouldn't dally.

NANNY McPHEE RETURNS ***

Susanna White directed this Family/Comedy. Watch Preview Cast: Emma Thompson, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Rhys Ifans, Maggie Smith, Asa Butterfield, Ralph Fiennes. Rated PG for rude humor, some language and mild thematic elements. Running time is one hour and forty-nine minutes.

Nanny McPhee (Thompson) appears at the door of a harried young mother (Maggie Gyllenhaal), who is trying to run the family farm while her husband is away at war. But once she's arrived, Nanny discovers the mother's children are fighting a war of their own against two spoiled city cousins who have just moved in.

This is a somewhat rare film in that it can really be enjoyed by the entire family. Kids should be delighted but parents and grandparents will find elements that are also quite enjoyable. Thompson is a real treasure both as an actress and as a writer. The rest of the cast is very good with Ifans a standout in his role as the smarmy brother-in-law with a gambling habit and and who's internal organs are consequently always at risk. Go ahead, take the kids. You'll enjoy this one. Theatres/Times.

PIRANHA 3D **

Alexandre Aja directed this Horror/Thriller. Watch Preview Cast: Jessica Szohr, Steven R. McQueen, Elisabeth Shue, Jerry O'Connell, Ving Rhames, Richard Dreyfuss, Christopher Lloyd. Rated R for sequences of strong bloody horror violence and gore, graphic nudity, sexual content, language and some drug use. Running time is one hour and twenty-nine minutes.

After a sudden underwater tremor sets free scores of prehistoric man-eating fish, an unlikely group of strangers must band together to stop themselves from becoming fish food for the area's new razor-toothed residents.

Consider this a combination of Jaws and Girls Gone Wild. It features lots of female nudity but the horror is mixed with a fair amount of comedy. The 3D effect is good even though it appears to have been converted from a 2D film. Dreyfuss's screen time probably sets a record for "shortest time on screen by a respected actor." This is an above average cast for this type of film. It was nice to see Shue as it's been a while since I've seen this fine actress. O'Connell is really over-the-top in his role but his demise is both protracted and unique. Not really a film I can recommend but it does hold your attention and I don't recall checking the time at all. Theatres/Times.

VAMPIRES SUCK **

Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer  co-wrote and co-directed this Comedy. Watch Preview Cast: Matt Lanter, Jenn Proske, Chris Riggi, Diedrich Bader, Krystal Mayo, Crista Flanagan, Ken Jeong, Arielle Kebbel, Devon Kelly. Rated PG-13 for crude sexual content, comic violence, language and teen partying. Running time is one hour and twenty minutes.

In this Twilight spoof an anxious, non-vampire teen (Proske), is torn between two boys (Lanter, Riggi). Before she can choose, she must get around her controlling father (Bader), who embarrasses her by treating her like a child.

If you think the Twilight series is overwrought and silly, as I do, this minor effort comes as something of a welcome relief. Crude, rude but very funny at times, this will never be an award winner but certainly has the potential to be a midnight show favorite or CD guilty pleasure. It's hard to recommend but I will tell you I laughed more in this film than any other in the past year or two. Theatres/Times.

Worthwhile (or not), 8/20/2010

This week you have your choice between a French language art film; a Jennifer Aniston comedy; a 3D comedy/horror film; a comedy spoof of the Twilight series, a lottery comedy; and a family comedy. I've seen three of the six although not necessarily the ones I would have preferred to see. The national reviews have been so-so on all but the vampire film but I found it rather amusing. I also liked Nanny McPhee and think it will be great for kids and their parents and grandparents.Check the MetaCritic site if you want the numerical ratings.

EAT PRAY LOVE **

Ryan Murphy directed this Comedy/Drama. Watch Preview Cast: Julia Roberts, James Franco, Javier Bardem, Viola Davis, Billy Crudup, Richard Jenkins. Rated PG-13 for brief strong language, some sexual references and male rear nudity. Running time is two hours and thirteen minutes.

A woman with a husband, a house, and a successful career finds herself lost, confused, and searching for what she really wants in life. Newly divorced and at a crossroads, she steps out of her comfort zone, risking everything to change her life, embarking on a journey around the world that becomes a quest for self-discovery. Based upon the bestselling memoir by Elizabeth Gilbert.

This is strictly a woman's picture but many of them are going to be bored by the incredibly, unnecessarily long running time. As a travelogue it's passable but it's basically a close up study of the many moods of Julia Roberts. The plot is too languorous to attract your attention for long and rmuch of the plot seems extraneous to the story. The actors are all fine but the whole thing is too narcissistic to be enjoyable. I spent most of my time staring at the clock, hoping it would all end soon. A big screen isn't essential. Theatres/Times.

THE EXPENDABLES **½

Sylvester Stallone co-wrote and directed this Action film. Watch Preview Cast: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Eric Roberts, Randy Couture, Steve Austin, David Zayas, Giselle Itie, Charisma Carpenter, Gary Daniels, Terry Crews, Mickey Rourke. Rated R for strong action and bloody violence throughout, and for some language. Running time is one hour and forty-three minutes.

A group of mercenaries are hired to infiltrate a South American country and overthrow its ruthless dictator. Once the mission begins, the men realize things aren’t quite as they appear, finding themselves caught in a dangerous web of deceit and betrayal.

Strictly for male action fans this film is an orgy of mayhem, explosions and slaughter. It barely has enough plot to hold the action together but that action is clearly the focal point and it's very well done. Some of the faces haven't been seen for awhile but they all acquit themselves nicely. This is not my idea of a good date or couples movie. A large screen and especially a good sound system are necessary to appreciate the full impact of all the action. Theatres/Times.

JOAN RIVERS: A PIECE OF WORK  [R] 1 hr. 24 min. Documentary Watch Preview Cast: Joan Rivers, Don Rickles, Kathy Griffin, Melissa Rivers. Plot: a year long ride with Joan Rivers in her 76th year of life. It peels away the mask of an iconic comedian, laying bare both the struggle and thrill of living life as a groundbreaking female performer. Showing at: Warren East.

SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD [PG-13] 1 hr. 48 min.Action/Comedy Watch Preview Cast: Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick, Alison Pill, Brandon Routh, Jason Schwartzman. Plot: a bass guitarist for a garage band has just met the girl of his dreams...literally. The only catch to winning her (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) is her seven evil exes who are coming to kill him. Jackson, Dwayne Johnson, Rob Riggle, Damon Wayans Jr. Rated PG-13 for crude and sexual content, language, violence and some drug material. Running time is one hour and forty-seven minutes.

Things don't quite go as planned when an opportunity arises for a forensic accountant (Ferrell) who's more interested in paperwork than hitting the streets, and a detective (Mark Wahlberg), who has been stuck with him as his partner ever since an embarrassing public incident with his quick trigger finger.

I have to admit I'm not a real Will Ferrell fan but here he's better than I expected. The premise is one of comic absurdity and while funny in fits and spurts, the incongruities get tiresome after awhile. At some point there should be a reasonable plot and that just never happens. There's also the fact there were only three other people with me while viewing this and I suspect it would have been a lot funnier with a large crowd reaction. The end credits feature some interesting statistics and at the very end of the film there is another scene featuring the two leads. There are a few action sequences that will benefit from a large screen but most of the time one really isn't necessary. Theatres/Times.

Worthwhile (or not), 8/6/2010

Here's MetaCritic's numerical rank of this week's films (xx/100 - the higher the number, the better the critics liked the film).
