A Million Ways To Die In The West **½

Seth MacFarlane co-wrote, produced, directed and stars in this Comedy Western. Watch Preview. Rated R for strong crude and sexual content, language throughout, some violence and drug material. Running time is one hour and fifty-six minutes.

When a cowardly sheep farmer's (MacFarlane) girlfriend (Seyfried) leaves him for another man (Harris) a mysterious and beautiful woman (Theron) helps him find his courage and they begin to fall in love. But when her husband (Neeson), a notorious outlaw, arrives seeking revenge, the farmer must put his newly found courage to the test.

This extremely crude Western parody may not be for everyone but for some it's the funniest film so far this year. I'm  not proud to say it but count me in that group. You could consider this Blazing Saddles on steroids in that the things some found objectionable in that film are nothing compared to what's in this one. The surprise for me was Theron, who displays a comedic sense I've not noticed before. Ribisi and Silverman are hilarious as the hooker and her boyfriend who are saving themselves for marriage! Neeson and Harris don't really have much to do but do add flavor to the film. It would be hard for me to recommend this to someone without knowing them well but if you aren't easily offended, you'll find yourself laughing out loud for a couple of hours, along with the cast who are clearly enjoying themselves.

Maleficent **½

Robert Stromberg directed this Adventure film. Watch Preview. Cast: Angelina Jolie, Sharlto Copley, Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple, Lesley Manville. Rated PG for sequences of fantasy action and violence, including frightening images. Running time is one hour and thirty-seven minutes.

A formerly beautiful, pure-hearted young fairy (Jolie) places a curse upon a King's newborn infant after she is betrayed. But, as the princess (Fanning) grows, the fairy realizes she holds the key to peace in the kingdom—and perhaps to her true happiness as well.

This  is an interesting take or sequel to the Sleeping Beauty tale. I doubt this is going to take hold as it's so at odds with the original story, but I'll give it credit for being original. Production values are first class, as is the cast. This is Jolie's film and she is very believable. I watched this with my wife and we both enjoyed it although I do wonder if parts might be a bit scary for small children. I saw the IMAX 3D version and the 3D was very good even though it wasn't originally filmed in that process. The running time is just right and this should be enjoyable entertainment for families as long as the children aren't too young.

Worthwhile (or not) 5/30/14

MetaCritic indicates Maleficent (56) is the top rated film this week, followed by A Million Ways To Die In The West (45). I saw both of these and found them both enjoyable although one of them is certainly not for everyone. The Immigrant **

James Gray co-wrote and directed this Drama. Watch Preview. Cast: Marion Cotillard, Joaquin Phoenix, Jeremy Renner, Angela Sarafyan, Dagmara Dominczyk. Rated R for sexual content, nudity and some language. Running time is two hours.

A Polish immigrant (Cotillard) falls prey to a charming but wicked man (Phoenix) who takes her in and forces her into prostitution in New York in the early 1920s so she can earn enough money to get her sister (Sarafyan) released from Ellis Island.

Feeling a little too chipper lately? Here's a little slice of gloom that wll take care of that. This is a well done film with great production values and a high quality cast performing a plot guaranteed to sink you into a pit of depression. On the positive side, no matter how bad things might be for you now, it's highly unlikely they'll ever be as bad as those Cotillard faces in this film. If you like art films and aren't interested in being entertained, this will do just fine. Otherwise, I'd look for a little lighter fare.

Blended **½

After a disastrous blind date (at Hooters), single parents Lauren (Barrymore) and Jim (Sandler) agree they never want to see each other again but find they and their kids are all stuck sharing a suite at a luxurious African safari resort for a week.

I'm trying to remember whether I've ever liked a film Sandler was in but I was pleasantly surprised this time. Instead of the moronic jerk he usually portrays, this time he's a reasonably sane, loving father of three daughters. That he really doesn't understand their needs becomes obvious early on but at least he's trying. Barrymore is the divorced mother of two boys and she doesn't quite know how to cope either. So, the plot becomes obvious in this pleasant and mostly innocuous romantic comedy. Unfortunately, it probably won't attract Sandler's usual crowd so unless young and middle-aged marrieds are interested this won't be around long. The kids are all great and young Thorne looks as if she could have a real career ahead. This is not memorable or a potential award winner but it will provide an enjoyable couple of hours for the 20 plus crowd.

X-Men: Days Of Future Past ***

Rated PG- 13 for sequences of intense sci-fi violence and action, some suggestive material, nudity and language. Running time is two hours and eleven minutes.

The characters from the original "X-Men" film trilogy join forces with their younger selves from "X-Men: First Class," in an epic battle that must change the past – to save our future.

I'm not really a fan of this series. I've seen all of them and, frankly, I can't remember any of the plots. So, I was less than overwhelmed about the thought of seeing another one. It turned out to be better than I'd hoped and if it wasn't for the unnecessary length I'd probably rate it higher than I have. The plot at  first glance sounds confusing but in practice it works out well. In fact, if you've never seen any of the series this is the one to watch since it encapsulates the salient points of the earlier ones. One of the advantages of this film as opposed to some of the other recently released epics is that this one has an excellent cast. Since it takes place in the past most of the film stars McAvoy and Fassbender rather than Stewart and McKellen but Jackman is the real star in both time periods with a lot of Lawrence thrown in for good measure. The film sports some really impressive graphic effects and of course there's plenty of fighting. I watched the 2D version and found the film quality quite acceptable.

There is an additional scene after all the credits but I have no idea what it's about (someone standing on a sand dune is building a pyramid). Due to the action and graphics you want to see this on a large screen. 2D Theatres/Times. 3D Theatres/Times.

Million Dollar Arm ***

Craig Gillespie directed this Sports drama. Watch Preview. Cast: Jon Hamm, Bill Paxton, Lake Bell, Suraj Sharma, Aasif Mandvi, Madhur Mittal, Pitobash, Alan Arkin. Rated PG for mild language and some suggestive content. Running time is two hours and four minutes.

Based on a true story, a once-successful sports agent (Hamm) goes to India to find cricket players to be trained as major league baseball pitchers.

If you're looking for a couple of hours of pleasant entertainment, this is your picture. There's nothing new or innovative about it but there is an interesting story presented by an excellent cast. Hamm and Bell have good screen chemistry, although to be fair I suspect any male would have good chemistry with Ms. Bell. The Indian actors are spot on and Paxton and Arkin are fine in their supporting  roles. A great deal of the film was obviously filmed in India which adds an element of interest. This could have been edited to ninety minutes without much loss but I didn't find myself checking my watch so I'm not complaining about the length. I doubt this will attract many younger viewers so crowds shouldn't be a problem for early attendees.

The final credits are interspersed with pictures of the actual people in this story. Screen size is relatively unimportant. Theatres/Times.

Godzilla **

Gareth Edwards directed this Sci-Fi drama. Watch Preview. Cast: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, Sally Hawkins, David Strathairn, Bryan Cranston. Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of destruction, mayhem and creature violence. Running time is two hours and three minutes.

Pits the world's most famous monster against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity's scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence.

I didn't have high hopes for this one and that feeling was fully realized. I'm guessing the only reason for remaking something like this is to show how good CGI effects have become. But when you hide those effects in mostly nighttime or smoke filled scenes you have to question the whole enterprise. What we have here is a B rate cast (Cranston and Binoche don't have much screen time) in a laughable plot and minimally impressive CGI effects. It was all underwhelming. That's not to say this won't do a lot of business with the teen/younger 20s crowd, but I just don't see older audiences being at all impressed. I watched this in the 2D version so I can't comment on the 3D effects, although I should point out this wasn't shot in 3D but was converted from 2D.

Neighbors **½

Nicholas Stoller directed this Comedy. Watch Preview. Cast: Seth Rogen, Zac Efron, Rose Byrne. Rated R for pervasive language, strong crude and sexual content, graphic nudity, and drug use throughout. Running time is one hour and thirty-six minutes.

A young couple (Rogen, Byrne) are forced to live next to a fraternity house after the birth of their baby.

This raunchy film has several laugh-out-loud scenes but, unfortunately for me, they were separated by too much that was unessential or boring. I realize it's impossible to maintain hilarity throughout a film but I would have appreciated  more than I saw. Rogen plays his usual role while Byrne is the real eye-opener. I'm used to seeing her in demure, professional type roles and here she's extremely foul mouthed and sexually aggressive. She almost brings that off, but not quite. I also had a hard time envisioning her and Rogen as a couple. Efron does very well in his role and looks to have a bright film future. The film is about the right length but there were still several unnecessary scenes that could have been deleted. Younger crowds will like this film very much while older audiences will be less appreciative. Check the rating info in the first paragraph and if any of that bothers you, take a pass on this one.

The Railway Man **½

Jonathan Teplitzky  directed this Drama. Watch Preview. Cast: Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman, Jeremy Irvine, Stellan Skarsgard, Sam Reid, Tanroh Ishida, Hiroyuki Sanada. Rated R for disturbing prisoner of war violence. Running time is one hour and fifty-six minutes.

A British Army officer, tormented as a prisoner of war at a Japanese labor camp during World War II, discovers the Japanese interpreter he holds responsible for much of his treatment is still alive and sets out to confront him.

This film is based on the book about the two years of starvation and torture endured by a British officer in WWII at the hands of his Japanese captors. Those who've seen The Bridge On The River Kwai will have a good idea of the emotional distress suffered by those who survived the project. Parts of the film are uncomfortable to watch but the ending and resulting emotional resolution make it worth while for those interested in good drama. Firth is excellent and Kidman is a nice presence with not a whole lot to do. The film is not totally true to the time element in the book but that's to be expected in a movie. This will be mostly appreciated by older audiences who have some frame of reference to the subject matter. Younger audiences will find the pacing too slow. Consequently, don't expect it to be here long.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 **

Marc Webb directed this Action film. Watch Preview. Cast: Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Dane DeHaan, Campbell Scott, Embeth Davidtz, Colm Feore, Paul Giamatti, Sally Field, B.J. Novak. Rated PG-13 for sequences of sci-fi action/violence. Running time is two hours and twenty-two minutes.

With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield)  must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, he realizes all his enemies have one thing in common: Oscorp. On the positive side, his girl friend (Emma Stone) is very nice!

I had hopes for this film but it turned out to be bloated, boring and not very exciting. I think the director was trying to do something to attract the female audience by adding a lot of romance but he overdid it and seriously skimped on the action sequences as a result. The cast is fine and so are what action sequences there are, but the pacing is so slow and there is so much unnecessary extraneous material it's just impossible to get involved. I watched this in IMAX 3D, which was excellent as usual, but the 3D effect becomes meaningless after awhile and I forgot it was even in that process. Spidey fans will no doubt need to attend but the average entertainment patron could easily give this a miss. My guess is after the first weekend, this will fade rapidly.

Worthwhile (or not) 5/2/14
