Fourteen-year-old Mattie Ross's (Hailee Steinfeld) father has been shot in cold blood by the coward Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin), and she is determined to bring him to justice by enlisting the help of a trigger-happy, drunken U.S. Marshal, Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges).
I still remember the 1969 John Wayne version of this film fondly, but this version is quite capable of standing on its own merits. Supposedly the Coen's went back to the original book rather than trying to update the earlier film but this version still seems familiar. Bridges does a good job of making the 'Rooster' character his own and Steinfeld is excellent as Mattie. Damon is also good but his role is a little more in the background. The dialogue sounds like something you'd expect from the 19th century and the photography is very good at presenting a view of a much less civilized time. If you're one of those who are always asking why they don't make Westerns any more...well, they do, and very well. Times/Theatres.

The test of wills between Jack Byrnes (Robert De Niro) and Greg Focker (Ben Stiller) escalates to new heights in the third installment of the series.
I remember the first film in this series as being fairly funny and the second as OK. This time around the franchise has run out of steam and there aren't enough laughs for it to be worth your while. The cast is fine, of course, but there's just nothing for them to do with a plot that's basically all yawns. I did laugh at one scene but you could see that one if you watch the preview. There are better films for your dollars right now.Times/Theatres.

MetaCritic indicates THE KING'S SPEECH (88) is the highest rated film for the week, closely followed by TRUE GRIT (80) with GULLIVER'S TRAVELS (36) and LITTLE FOCKERS (27) coming in a very low third and fourth. Tron: Legacy **
Joseph Kosinski directed this Sci-Fi Adventure. Watch Preview. Cast: Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde, Bruce Boxleitner, James Frain, Beau Garrett, Michael Sheen. Rated PG for sequences of sci-fi action violence and brief mild language. Running time is two hours and seven minutes.
A rebellious 27-year-old (Garrett Hedlund), is haunted by the mysterious disappearance of his father (Jeff Bridges), a man once known as the world's leading video-game developer. When he investigates a strange signal sent from the father's old Arcade he finds himself pulled into a digital world where his father has been trapped for 20 years.
I'm a long-time Sci-Fi fan but even I can't get excited by this film. The plot is threadbare and at times makes no sense. The actors do fine considering what they've got to work with and the process that gives us both a young and old Jeff Bridges is interesting. The visuals of the digital world are interesting but we've seen most of them before, and the over-all background is dark and gloomy. The soundtrack is loud and bombastic and will probably not be appreciated by older patrons. Fortunately, the running time is not excessive although they could have easily cut thirty minutes without anyone noticing. I doubt that most over forty are going care much for this unless they're a gamer. Under forty, and especially gamers will probably find this more enjoyable than I did. If you're going to see it, by all means go for the largest possible screen and 3D (which is effective). 3D Theatres/Times. 2D Theatres/Times. IMAX 3D.

The Tourist ***
Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck directed this Thriller Watch Preview Cast: Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie, Paul Bettany, Rufus Sewell, Timothy Dalton, Steven Berkoff. Rated PG-13 for violence and brief strong language. Running time is one hour and forty-three minutes.
An American tourist (Depp)visiting Italy to mend a broken heart meets an extraordinary woman (Jolie) who deliberately crosses his path. Against the breathtaking backdrop of Venice, he pursues a potential romance but soon finds himself the pursued as both are caught in a whirlwind of intrigue and danger.
If you really enjoy films and you've been watching them as long as I have, this will provide you with a pleasant couple of hours. The plot's a little weak, although not as bad as many I've seen in the past few years. The cast is attractive but neither Depp nor Jolie is in any way taxed by their respective roles. The pacing is slow but I found that a refreshing change from today's ultra-fast MTV style. The locale filming is very nice, especially Venice. But what I found so pleasant about this film is how it reminded me of the classic thrillers from the '60s (Charade, etc). If you're under 40 I don't think this will ever be on your "must see" list. But, if you're a little older, this is a pleasant homage to a film style from the past, and one I found very entertaining. Theatres/Times.

This time around – Edmund and Lucy Pevensie, along with their pesky cousin Eustace Scrubb – find themselves swallowed into a painting and on to a fantastic Narnian ship headed for the very edges of the world.
I've watched the earlier two films in this series and don't remember being as bored as I was this time around. This film is most definitely aimed at the teen/subteen crowd — the younger the better — and I imagine most adults will wish they were somewhere else if they attend. MetaCritic indicates NARNIA has a rating of (53), THE TOURIST (40) and nothing yet on TAMARA DREW. I'd say NARNIA is OK for kids but most adults will find it boring and I'd chose 2D rather than 3D. THE TOURIST is much better than most reviews I've seen indicate and I think it's a fine choice for adults. I've seen nothing on TAMARA DREW but since Stephen Frears is the director I'm guessing it will be good. Check out the MetaCritic website for additional comments on each film. Worthwhile (or not), 12/3/2010
MetaCritic indicates the best film this week is 127 HOURS (82), which is a very good rating if you're interesting in watching someone cut his arm off. THE WARRIOR'S WAY doesn't have a rating yet but it looks as if viewers have given it a 50. I didn't watch either film as neither of them were personally appealing. In intensive care and charged with three murders, she will not only have to prove her innocence, but also identify and denounce those corrupt government institutions that very nearly destroyed her life. Once upon a time, she was a victim. Now Salander is fighting back.
If you've seen the two earlier films in this trilogy, this is a must see. It wraps up the story and explains all that has gone on before. If you haven't seen the two earlier films, you'd probably be ahead to pass on this one as I don't think you'd get much out of it. There's not as much action in this summation since a great deal of the story is a courtroom drama where all is finally explained. In Swedish with English subtitles.

Steve Antin wrote and directed this Musical Drama. Watch Preview. Cast: Cher, Christina Aguilera, Eric Dane, Cam Gigandet, Julianne Hough, Peter Gallagher, Alan Cumming, Kristen Bell, Stanley Tucci. Rated PG-13 for sexual content including several suggestive dance routines, partial nudity, language and some thematic material. Running time is one hour and fifty minutes.
Ali (Christina Aguilera) is a small-town girl with a big voice who lands a job as a cocktail waitress from Tess (Cher), the Burlesque club's proprietor and headliner. The outrageous costumes and bold choreography enrapture the young ingenue, who vows to perform there one day.
The only reasons to watch this film are the performances of Cher and especially Aguilera during their singing/dancing routines . Everyone else in the cast is way in the background with the exceptions of Tucci and Bell, who have a fair amount of screen time but clearly as second bananas. Those who liked Hough on Dancing With The Stars will have trouble recognizing her in her bit part and an even harder time seeing her dance. The plot is almost non-existent but it really doesn't matter since the musical performances carry the film nicely. A large screen with very good sound will add immensely to your enjoyment.

Everyone else in the cast is way in the background with the exceptions of Tucci and Bell, who have a fair amount of screen time but clearly as second bananas. Those who liked Hough on Dancing With The Stars will have trouble recognizing her in her bit part and an even harder time seeing her dance. The plot is almost non-existent but it really doesn't matter since the musical performances carry the film nicely. A large screen with very good sound will add immensely to your enjoyment.

Worthwhile (or not), 11/26/2010
MetaCritic indicates the best film this week is the animated family film TANGLED (72), followed by THE GIRL WHO KICKED THE HORNET'S NEST (60), LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS (55), BURLESQUE (49) and FASTER (41). This was a pleasant surprise. I was expecting a pretty run-of-the-mill "lets break mom out of jail" film but this is a high calibre thriller. The pacing is a little slow at first as Crowe gives up on the law and starts using his intelligence (he's a college prof) to develop an escape plan. Once the planning gets started, the pace picks up and you've got a real thriller by the end. Most films of this type are fairly predictable, but not this one. I had no idea how this would end until we actually reached there. Banks, who is usually seen in comedy roles gets to do some emoting here and she does very well. Neeson and Dennehy have very little screen time...blink and you'll miss them. If you like a good action/suspense film this is one you'll want to see. Theatres/Times.

There's no more Hogwarts, no more quixotic teachers (with a couple of exceptions), the pacing is slow, and for me, the plot seemed disconnected, and the overall mood was depressive. I haven't read this book but I talked to a few who have and liked it better than I did, so perhaps you need to have a good background to get full enjoyment. It's obviously an expensive, well crafted film, but not particularly entertaining as far as I'm concerned. If you want to see it, the largest screen and best sound will add a great deal to the experience. Times/Theatres.

UNSTOPPABLE ***
Tony Scott directed this Action/Thriller. Watch Preview. Cast: Denzel Washington, Chris Pine, Rosario Dawson, Kevin Chapman. Rated PG-13 for sequences of action and peril, and some language. Running time is one hour and thirty-eight minutes.
A veteran train engineer (Denzel Washington) and a young conductor (Chris Pine) race the clock to stop an unmanned runaway train – effectively a missile the size of a skyscraper -- and prevent disaster in a heavily populated area.
Action fans will be very pleased with this one. The plot, actors, and pacing are excellent and will keep you involved throughout. Washington and Pine have a nice screen chemistry and Dawson does her part authoritatively and well. The destruction scenes are effective and help with the suspense. About the only quibble I had with the train scenes is I don't think they were moving at anything close to the speed we were told they were, but that's relatively unimportant in the overall scheme of things. If you're a fan of action movies, this is worth your time. I'd see this on the biggest screen possible for maximum effect. Theatres/Times.

Rated PG-13 for sequences of intense sci-fi action and violence, some language, and brief sexual content. Running time is one hour and thirty-two minutes.
Strange lights descend on the city of Los Angeles, drawing people outside like moths to a flame where an extraterrestrial force threatens to swallow the entire human population off the face of the earth.
About the only thing positive I can say about this is: the aliens are somewhat original and the cgi effects are reasonably good. After that, it's all downhill. The plot goes nowhere, so there's not a lot of tension to keep your interest high. The actors are competent but they're basically TV actors and not the calibre it takes to carry an expensive motion picture. I like Balfour on Haven, but even there he's not the lead. Thompson has appeared on a lot of TV episodes, many of which I'm sure I've seen, but I don't remember her characters. Zayas is the most recognizable, if you watch Dexter. The ending leaves you completely at a loss. I can only surmise a sequel is planned to explain the entire story. I'm guessing, however, this film won't gross enough to justify a sequel so you'll be left up in the air. Save your time and money, this one isn't worth it. Theatres/Times.

A hard–working TV producer (McAdams) is fired from a local news program but finds a job at "Daybreak" (the last–place national morning news show). When she decides to revitalize the show by bringing on a legendary TV anchor (Ford) and pairing him with a co–host (Keaton), she is soon struggling to save her romantic relationship, her reputation, her job and ultimately, the show itself.
This is a very predictable comedy that will be enjoyed mostly by the over 35 crowd, although the pacing is sprightly enough for a younger crowd and McAdams is popular with them also. For those of us who are older, the pleasure comes in watching an extremely good cast take us through a familiar story. Ford is very good in his curmudgeon role, Keaton is good as his female counterpoint and McAdams adds zest to the plot. The aforementioned pacing is very good and keeps you from needing to constantly check your watch. This isn't an award winner but it will keep you entertained for a couple of hours. Theatres/Times.

Todd Phillips directed this Comedy. Watch Preview. Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Zach Galifianakis, Michelle Monaghan, Jamie Foxx, Juliet Lewis, Danny McBride, RZA. Rated R for language, drug use and sexual content. Running time is one hour and forty minutes.
An expectant first-time father (Downey Jr.) is forced to hitch a cross-country ride with an aspiring actor (Galifinakis) when he's put on the no fly list due to a misunderstanding.
I think Downey Jr. is a great actor but his character in this film is not one you're likely to like. I suspect Galifianakis is an acquired taste, but one I've yet to acquire. Throw in a plot that didn't ring true to me, or even make much sense, and you've got a film I don't think anyone over 35 is going to get excited by. Younger audiences may go for the stupidity that passes for humor in this film but I'm not sure that's even true, although a man and his dog masturbating simultaneously while someone else watches may be more appealing to them than I found it to be. This is just a waste of time as far as I'm concerned.

Worthwhile (or not), 11/5/2010
MetaCritic isn't isn't as useful as it could be this week since one of the four new releases isn't listed. Of the three that are, MEGAMIND (65) and CATFISH (65) came in with the highest listing followed by DUE DATE (52). I did see one of these and was less than impressed. Tony Goldwyn directed this Drama. Watch Preview. Cast: Hilary Swank, Sam Rockwell, Minnie Driver, Melissa Leo, Clea DuVall, Juliette Lewis, Loren Dean. Rated R for language and some violent images. Running time is one hour and forty-seven minutes.
The inspirational true story of a sister (Swank), a Massachusetts wife, mother of two, and high school dropout, who dedicates her life to overturning her brother's (Rockwell) murder conviction. In order to represent him she gets a college B.A. and graduates from law school. She's aided in her task by a law school classmate (Driver).
To be honest, I only went to this because there was nothing else that interested me this week. From the description of the film I really didn't think I'd care for it. But, it turned out to be first class in every way. The cast is great and the direction and pacing keep you involved throughout. While it isn't entertainment in the normal sense, it is certainly thought provoking, causing me to wonder just how many individuals have been wrongly incarcerated, although the brother looked like someone who would have gone to jail for something during his life and you understand why the police considered him a viable suspect. This is worth your time, either at the theatre or later on DVD. Theatres/Times.

HEREAFTER **
Clint Eastwood directed this Supernatural Drama. Watch Preview. Cast: Matt Damon, Cecile de France, Frankie McLaren, George McLaren, Jay Mohr, Bryce Dallas Howard. Rated PG-13 for mature thematic elements including disturbing disaster and accident images, and for brief strong language. Running time is two hours and nine minutes.
Tells the story of three people touched by death in different ways. A blue-collar American (Matt Damon) who has a special connection to the afterlife; a French journalist (Cecile De France) who has a near-death experience; and a London schoolboy who loses the person closest to him. Their lives intersect, forever changed by what they believe might--or must--exist in the hereafter.
This is where I feel compelled to remind you I review for entertainment value and not for artistic merit. Artistically, this film is very good. The cast is very good and de France is excellent. Unfortunately, there is virtually nothing entertaining here and when you consider the running length, the film becomes too much of too little. The pace of the film is so slow it's hard for me to imagine anyone under fifty willing to sit through it. What you have is three separate stories that don't coalesce until the very end of the film and even then just hint at what may come later. I didn't expect a complete and full explanation of the hereafter, obviously, but I was sure hoping for more than this. Theatres/Times.

Robert Schwentke directed this Action/Comedy Watch Preview. Cast: Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Helen Mirren, Karl Urban, Mary-Louise Parker, Brian Cox, Julian McMahon, Richard Dreyfuss. Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of action violence and brief strong language. Running time is one hour and fifty-one minutes.
Frank (Bruce Willis), Joe (Morgan Freeman), Marvin (John Malkovich) and Victoria (Helen Mirren) used to be the CIA's top agents – but the secrets they know just made them the Agency's top targets. Now marked for assassination, they must use all their collective cunning, experience and teamwork to stay one step ahead of their deadly pursuers.
This was an unexpected and very pleasant surprise. It has the right balance of comedy, action, plot and cast for a top notch entertainment experience. I really can't see how you could have made a film of the genre any better. It won't win any awards and you'll probably forget about it shortly after seeing it, but while you're watching you'll be very entertained. See it, you'll like it. Theatres/Times.

JACKASS 3D 0 stars
Jeff Tremaine directed this so called Comedy Watch Preview. Cast: Johnny Knoxville, Bam Margera, Ryan Dunn, Steve-O, Jason "Wee Man" Acuña, Chris Pontius, Preston Lacy, Dave England, Ehren McGhehey. Rated R for male nudity, extremely crude and dangerous stunts throughout, and for language. Running time is one hour and thirty-four minutes.
A collection of stunts ranging from moronic to absolutely disgusting.
This review won't take long. This is absolutely the most disgusting film I've ever seen. I was ready to walk out in five minutes but stayed hoping to find something worthwhile. I never did and recommend you stay far, far away from this film as well as those who think it's entertaining. I will say it's the most natural looking 3D I've seen but that in no way can justify spending your time or money on it.

According to MetaCritic the best film this week is Never Let Me Go (68), followed by Red (60), Jackass 3D (53), Secretariat (61), Life As We Know It (41), with I Want Your Money and Like Dandelion Dust coming up last since they wern't screened for the critics. I saw two of these and hated one and really liked the second. I'm also positive the best attended films will not follow the MetaCritic rankings.
