A fresh and funny retelling of the Snow White legend featuring the usual cast of characters: Snow White (Collins), the handsome Prince (Hammer) and the wicked Queen (Roberts).
This is an expensive looking film with a very good cast but with a plot only mildly amusing. This type of humor is hard to maintain and while there are numerous chuckles throughout my main thought when exiting was, "I wonder who they made this for?" It isn't nearly funny enough to become a mass audience adult hit. Teen girls will probably appreciate the romance angle but other than that group, I'm hard pressed to think who I could recommend this to. If this does look appealing to you I wouldn't dally. This isn't going to be around long.
There are additional scenes played during the initial credits but when those cease there are no further scenes. A large screen will show off the special effects but isn't necessary otherwise. Theatres/Times.

Wrath Of The Titans *½

Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of fantasy violence and action. Running time is one hour and thirty-nine minutes.
Perseus (Worthington) bravely embarks on a treacherous quest into the underworld to rescue Zeus (Neeson), overthrow the Titans and save mankind.
This is one of those pictures only a little over a hour-and-a-half long that felt like forever. It features a very good cast and some impressive cgi effects but a plot that basically consists of people beating on each other the entire time and almost nothing else. It soon got to the point I didn't care who won or lost, I just wanted it over. I watched the IMAX 3D version and I will say they continue to have the best 3D I've seen. If you are at all interested in how good 3D can be, this is the version to see.
There are no additional scenes once the final credits begin. If you want to get anything out of this, the bigger the screen the better. 2D Theatres/Times. 3D Theatres/Times. IMAX 3D Times.

MetaCritic indicates SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN (60) and JEFF WHO LIVES AT HOME (60) are tied as the best movies this week, followed by MIRROR MIRROR (51) and WRATH OF THE TITANS (38). I watched two of this week's new films and wasn't overly impressed with either. This week teenage females should consider MIRROR MIRROR and teenage males should go for WRATH OF THE TITANS. Rampart *½
Oren Moverman directed this Drama. Watch Preview. Cast: Woody Harrelson, Ben Foster, Robin Wright, Sigourney Weaver, Steve Buscemi, Anne Heche, Cynthia Nixon, Ice Cube, Brie Larson, Ned Beatty. Rated R for pervasive language, sexual content and some violence. Running time is one hour and forty-eight minutes.
A Vietnam vet and a Rampart Precinct cop gets caught on tape beating a suspect and finds himself in a personal and emotional downward spiral. Someone appears to be trying to entrap him, and his ex-wives and daughters want nothing more to do with him.
This has a very good cast who all purport themselves well. Harrelson is very convincing as an amoral cop who has convinced himself he's actually doing good. But for me the film has a big problem: I didn't in any way like or connect with Harrelson's character so I was completely indifferent to his problems. And, not caring about someone in a film is the kiss of death as far as participating in the drama goes. Consequently, I was bored from the start and I suspect many who go to see this expecting a typical police drama will be also. Unless you're into psychological dramas about self destructive behavior that are basically all talk and no action, I'd give this one a pass.
There are no additional scenes once the final credits begin. Auditorium size will not effect your appreciation of this film. Theatres/Times.

I was pleasantly surprised to find myself enjoying the film once the rather slow opening sequence was done. The game itself does a good job of holding your attention and concludes well while leaving a clear path for the future sequels. The cast is very good and Banks and Tucci are outstanding even though Banks is hardly recognizable in her garish costuming. While there is a fair amount of violence I can't imagine it will bother the average teen.

Friends With Kids **½
Jennifer Westfeldt directed and wrote this Romantic Comedy. Watch Preview. Cast: Adam Scott, Jennifer Westfeldt, Jon Hamm, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Chris O'Dowd, Megan Fox, Edward Burns. Rated R for sexual content and language. Running time is one hour and forty-seven minutes.
Comedy about a close-knit circle of friends at that moment in life when children arrive and everything changes. The last two singles in the group (Scott and Westfeldt) observe the effect that kids have on their friends' relationships and wonder if there's a better way. They decide to have a kid together - and date other people.
This is a fairly typical romantic comedy, perhaps a bit more adult than you normally see. Most of the cast is familiar, mainly because you see them all the time in TV programs, rather than in starring movie roles. The cast does a fine job in this comedy that develops the coupling in a slightly unusual way. Westfeldt who both wrote and directed has also cast herself in the lead female role, and does a fine, sympathetic job. Wiig and Rudolph do well in their secondary roles. The men are very good but this is clearly a woman's film. As much as I enjoyed it, the fact it ends exactly where I thought it would keeps me from giving it a higher rating, though I must say there are a few surprises along the way that keep it from being too predictable.

MetaCritic indicates 21 JUMP STREET (70) is the best movie this week, followed by FRIENDS WITH KIDS (55). I watched one of this week's new films and enjoyed it. This week is pretty easy: if you're 18-35, go for 21 JUMP STREET. If you're older, and especially if you're going as a couple, see FRIENDS WITH KIDS. A fast-talking literary agent (Murphy) sets his sights on a New Age guru for his own selfish purposes. But the agent's life comes unglued after a magical Bodhi tree mysteriously appears in his backyard and loses its leaves whenever he talks.
Two things you should know about this film; it was made over three years ago and is just now being released, and it isn't in the least bit funny. I suspect those two things are closely related! Oh, Murphy still gives us all his comic facial mannerisms, but those alone don't make for a successful comedy. The production values are fine and the cast purport themselves well with what they have to work with, but that just isn't enough to justify the price of admission. The proper place for this film is on the Lifetime channel where its audience will appreciate the film's message about the importance of family presented with maudlin sentimentality. There were a couple of young women in the audience I saw this with and I asked them afterward what they thought about the film. They both laughed and said they fell asleep. Enough said.

But, I'm happy to tell you that reaction was undeserved as I found this to be a very entertaining film. Not groundbreaking or epically spectacular, but fun and a very pleasant way to spend a couple of hours. The pace is very good and the two hours passed without need to check my watch. While the majority of the cast weren't familiar to me they were all quite adequate and were aided by some very good cgi effects. I watched the 2D version and noted the film's 3D version was an enhanced 2D so I didn't mind missing the 3D although I wouldn't mind checking out the IMAX 3D for comparison. While there's lots of action for the men, none of it is particularly graphic and women will enjoy the romantic aspects of the film. The pic clearly ends with the prospect of a sequel in mind but attendance at this first one will determine whether there will be another.

I watched the 2D version and noted the film's 3D version was an enhanced 2D so I didn't mind missing the 3D although I wouldn't mind checking out the IMAX 3D for comparison. While there's lots of action for the men, none of it is particularly graphic and women will enjoy the romantic aspects of the film. The pic clearly ends with the prospect of a sequel in mind but attendance at this first one will determine whether there will be another.
There are no additional scenes once the final credits begin. The largest possible screen will enhance your enjoyment. 2D Theatres/Times. 3D Theatres/Times. IMAX 3D Times.
Worthwhile (or not), 3/9/2012
MetaCritic indicates JOHN CARTER (52) is the best movie this week, followed by SILENT HOUSE (49) and A THOUSAND WORDS (26). I watched two of this week's new films and enjoyed one but wasn't impressed by the other. Check out the MetaCritic website for additional comments on each film.

Plot: a fast-talking literary agent (Murphy) sets his sights on a New Age guru for his own selfish purposes. But the guru is on to him, and the agent's life comes unglued after a magical Bodhi tree mysteriously appears in his backyard. Showing at: Northrock 14, Warren East, Warren West.

Project X **½
Nima Nourizadeh directed this Comedy. Watch Preview. Cast: Kirby Bliss Blanton, Jonathan Daniel Brown, Oliver Cooper, Alexis Knapp, Thomas Mann, Miles Teller. Rated R for crude and sexual content throughout, nudity, drugs, drinking, pervasive language, reckless behavior and mayhem - all involving teens. Running time is one hour and twenty-eight minutes.
Three seemingly anonymous high school seniors (Mann, Cooper, Brown) attempt to finally make a name for themselves. Their idea is innocent enough: throw a party that no one will forget... but nothing could prepare them for this party.
It's really hard to predict what someone will think about this film Social conservatives will be appalled while Social liberals will be sorry they missed the party. I wasn't offended and found it sporadically funny but if you're concerned, check out the MPAA rating at the top. It pretty much covers what you can expect to see. The picture uses the "found footage" concept; what you see has supposedly been videotaped by one of the students. That concept is carried out well and the basically unknown cast does a good job of appearing to be who the movie says they are. Pacing is good and the film never bogs down. This isn't the best picture for teens but something tells me they're already well aware of what happens at parties like this.
