Batman vs. Superman: Dawn Of Justice **

Zack Snyder directed this Action film. Watch Preview. Cast: Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Jesse Eisenberg, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Jeremy Irons, Holly Hunter, Gal Gadot, Lauren Cohan, Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Rated PG - 13 for intense sequences of violence and action throughout, and some sensuality. Running time is two hours and thirty-one minutes.

Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante (Affleck) takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior (Cavill). But, when Lex Luthor (Eisenberg) creates the monster Doomsday, they must join together, along with Wonder Woman (Gadot), to stop it from destroying Metropolis.

The only positive things I can say about this incoherent, bloated mess is it has very good CG effects and an above average cast. But, if you can figure out what's going on in this film, you're a better person than I am. The first thirty minutes jumps around dizzyingly through several storylines, leaving you puzzled and eventually indifferent. Batman is a bully who feels the need to brand the villains he catches with a bat image. Superman seems torn by his need to save Lois Lane (Adams) vs. everyone else. And, Wonder Woman just pops into the story to add an extra dose of violence without ever having been called upon to do so. I can see a younger crowd enjoying this for the violence and destruction alone, without any need for a meaningful storyline. But the rest are going to find this too long, too violent and too confusing to be enjoyable. I saw this in the 2D version so I can't comment on the 3D quality.

There are no additional scenes once the credits begin. You'll need a large screen to appreciate all of the violence and destruction. 2D Theatres/Times. 3D Theatres/Times. 2D IMAX Times. 3D IMAX times.

The Divergent Series: Allegiant **

Robert Schwentke directed this Sci-fi thriller. Watch Preview Cast: Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Octavia Spencer, Naomi Watts, Jeff Daniels, Ray Stevenson, Zoe Kravitz, Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Maggie Q, Keiynan Lonsdale, Jonny Weston, Mekhi Phifer, Daniel Dae Kim, Nadia Hilker, Bill Skarsgård. Rated PG-13 for intense violence and action, thematic elements, and some partial nudity. Running time is two hours and one minute.

Tris (Woodley) and Four (James) go beyond the wall enclosing Chicago and she is forced to make impossible choices about courage, allegiance, sacrifice and love.

Basically, this is a two hour waste of your time and money. The production values are good, with some impressive CG effects, and the cast is attractive and competent. But, there's no story. You learn one minor detail that could have been covered either in the last or in the next film in the series. On the positive side, the film will provide you with a question: how do the people live in the radioactive wasteland without any evident source of food, much less have normal children, since the radioactivity is so high anyone else visiting must be decontaminated? The normal purpose of a sequel is advancing the plot,  but since that doesn't happen here, you're left with the realization the film's only real purpose is separating you from your money. If all you're interested in is action involving attractive actors, and no meaningful story is required...go for it. Otherwise, pass on this one.

There are no additional scenes once the credits begin. A large screen will enhance the action. Theatres/Times. IMAX Times.

10 Cloverfield Lane ***½

Dan Trachtenberg directed this Thriller. Watch Preview. Cast: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman, John Gallagher Jr.. Rated PG-13 for thematic material including frightening sequences of threat with some violence, and brief language. Running time is one hour and forty-five minutes.

After losing consciousness in a car accident, a girl (Winstead) wakes up in an underground cellar with a man (Goodman) who tells her the outside world has perished in a nuclear attack.

This is one of those reviews in which I really can't say much about the film's plot, not that I usually tell much anyway. But, to let you know what's going on here would ruin a lot of the impact the film has. You're never really sure whether or not there has been some kind of attack, or whether she has been secreted in the bunker of a lonely older man who is simply looking for a love slave. Or, whether both or neither of those are true. And, you won't find out until the last few minutes. But, I can tell you that in my opinion, it's worth the wait. And, that's why I like this film, the fact the ending was never telegraphed. For those who are afraid this will be another of those jerky, found footage films like Cloverfield was...it isn't. The production values are good as is the cast, what there is of one. I saw this in the IMAX version, but unless you're just really fond of that theatre you'll do just as well in any auditorium, since almost all of the action takes place in a small, underground bunker.

There are no additional scenes once the credits begin. Any screen size will do. Theatres/Times. IMAX Times.

The Brothers Grimsby ½

Louis Leterrier  directrd this Action/Comedy. Watch Preview. Cast: Sacha Baron Cohen, Mark Strong, Isla Fisher, Rebel Wilson, Gabourey Sidibe, Penelope Cruz. Rated R for strong crude sexual content, graphic nudity, violence, language, and some drug use. Running time is one hour and twenty-three minutes.

MI6’s top assassin (Mark Strong) has a brother. Unfortunately for him, he’s an English football hooligan (Sacha Baron Cohen) from the town of Grimsby.

You say you've never been offended by a movie? Would you like to be? Well, here you go. I'm one of those who don't find films really offensive, just bad, but this one is truly, truly distasteful. It's a combination of a typical Mark Strong action film with a typical Sacha Baron Cohen attempt at a comedy, so it does have a little action going for it, but this isn't something I could ever recommend for a rational adult. In fact the only thing going for this film is that it's less than an hour and a half long. The cast and production values are fine as is the pacing, but the excessive crudity ruins it all. The only group I can see actually enjoying this film are boys who are too young to get in the theatre due to the rating, and the actual rating description is mild compared to what you'll see on the screen..

There is a short scene at the end of the credits. Screen size is unimportant because your eyes will be closed for most of the film. Theatres/Times.

London Has Fallen **½

Babak Najafi directed this Action film. Watch Preview. Cast: Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart, Morgan Freeman, Alon Moni Aboutboul, Angela Bassett, Robert Forster, Jackie Earle Haley, Melissa Leo, Radha Mitchell, Sean O'Bryan, Charlotte Riley, Waleed F. Zuaiter. Rated R for strong violence and language throughout. Running time is one hour and thirty-nine minutes.

After the British Prime Minister passes away, his funeral becomes a target of a terrorist organization to destroy some of the world’s most powerful leaders, devastate the British capital, and unleash a terrifying vision of the future.

This has gotten very bad national reviews, and it's obvious this film will never win an Academy Award, or any other award for that matter. But, if what you're looking for is an action film, that's exactly what this film delivers...and lots of it. There are some very good CG (computer graphics) effects once the destruction of London starts which effectively gets everything rolling. Production values are good and the cast is very adequate for what is required. Pacing is excellent so you're not going to be looking at your watch. There is a little romance for the women attending, but this is mostly non-stop violence that will make the action junkies very happy.

There are no additional scenes once the credits begin. A large screen will enhance the action. Theatres/Times.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot **

Glenn Ficarra, John Requa directed this War comedy. Watch Preview. Cast: Tina Fey, Margot Robbie, Martin Freeman, Alfred Molina, Billy Bob Thornton. Rated R for pervasive language, some sexual content, drug use and violent war images. Running time is one hour and fifty-two minutes.

An adaptation of journalist Kim Barker’s wartime memoir, "The Taliban Shuffle," which recounts her experiences covering conflicts in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

If you're interested in a film about the adventures of a war correspondent, this should fill the bill. If, however, you decided to watch this because you were looking for some laughs...well, think again. As a biography, this is a reasonably good pic. But the majority of the scenes seem to be about the parties they had while waiting for something to happen. And, when something does happen, it isn't all that exciting...neither are the parties for that matter. Fey does a fine job as does Freeman. Thornton, however, is basically in a bit part so his talents are mostly wasted. And, Robbie is basically screen candy. This is an OK film, but it's something you would enjoy as much on a cable channel (this would be hard to put on an OTA channel as there wouldn't be much left after deleting all the profanity) as you would in a theatre.

There are no additional scenes once the credits begin. Screen size is unimportant. Theatres/Times.

Triple 9 **

John Hillcoat directed this Thriller. Watch Preview. Cast: Casey Affleck, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Anthony Mackie, Aaron Paul, Clifton Collins Jr., Norman Reedus, Teresa Palmer, Michael K. Williams, Gal Gadot, Woody Harrelson, Kate Winslet. Rated R for strong violence and language throughout, drug use and some nudity. Running time is one hour and fifty-five minutes.

A crew of dirty cops is blackmailed by the Russian mob into executing a virtually impossible heist.

The majority of the characters in this film are bad people...really, bad people. And, because of that fact, this is in no way a feel good film. The Russians are blackmailing a group of already dirty cops into working for them because one of the cops has a child with one of the mob members, and he's trying to maintain a relationship with the child. But, that attempt doesn't make you feel any better about him, as he's ready to kill another cop in order to draw the entire force's attention away from a heist. The title is the police code for "officer down". The only two good cops we spend any time with, Affleck and Harrelson, are so overpowered by the bad cops it's hard to come away with a good feeling about any police. Winslet is so far into her character, a Russian mob leader, she's hardly recognizable. I have to wonder if that wasn't her intent after reading the script. If you're into really gritty, violent police drama you may find this to your taste. But, I'm guessing most won't be entertained at all.

There are no additional scenes after the credits begin. Screen size is unimportant. Theatres/Times.

Gods Of Egypt *½

Alex Proyas directed this Action film. Watch Preview. Cast: Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Brenton Thwaites, Chadwick Boseman, Elodie Yung, Courtney Eaton, Gerard Butler, Geoffrey Rush. Rated PG-13 for fantasy violence and action, and some sexuality. Running time is two hours and seven minutes.

Inspired by the classic mythology of Egypt, the survival of mankind hangs in the balance as an unexpected mortal hero (Brenton Thwaites) undertakes a thrilling journey to save the world and rescue his true love.

The thought that kept occurring to me as I slogged through this was: "these actors must really have needed this salary to be willing to be associated with this film". The one good thing I can say is it does have very good CG effects. But, the plot is so silly and the action is so boringly repetitious that all we have is two hours of glittery drivel. The only group I can think of who might enjoy this are adolescent boys, who will be attracted to the busty actresses and constant fighting. Most everyone else will not be entertained. I watched the 2D version of this so I can't comment on the 3D quality.

There are no additional scenes once the credits begin. A large screen is requisite if you are to get anything at all from this film. 2D Theatres/Times. 3D Theatres/Times. 3D IMAX Times.

Deadpool **½

Tim Miller directed this Sci-fi/Action film Watch Preview Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, T.J. Miller, Gina Carano, Ed Skrein, Brianna Hildebrand. Rated R for strong violence and language throughout, sexual content and graphic nudity. Running time is one hour and forty-eight minutes.

The story of  a former Special Forces operative turned mercenary (Reynolds) who, after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, hunts down the man  (Skrein) who nearly destroyed his life.

I've never been a real fan of the Super Hero genre, finding them to more silly than exciting. But, here is a film for those of us who feel that way. You can tell it's not going to be taking itself seriously right from the opening credits and it maintains a tongue-in-cheek approach throughout the film. There's a little something for everyone. Lots of action, a love story and plenty of (mostly crude) one liners that will cause you to chuckle. Production values are very good as is the cast, especially Reynolds and Baccarin. The running time is just a little long but the pacing is good enough you won't really notice. I saw this in the IMAX version which is not full height so any large screen should work.

There are additional snippets of Reynolds at the end of the credits which are funny but add nothing to the plot. This will be best enjoyed on a large screen. Theatres/Times. IMAX Times.

Room ***

Lenny Abrahamson directed this Drama. Watch Preview. Cast: Brie Larson, Jacob Tremblay, Joan Allen, William H. Macy. Rated R for language. Running time is one hour and fifty-eight minutes.

A unique and touching exploration of the boundless love between a mother (Larson) and her child (Tremblay). Based on the novel.

My goal is finding films that entertain, which is why my rating of this film is lower than you might expect. After all, it has been nominated for four Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actress. And, it is a superb film, with two top notch actors and a great supporting cast. So why only three stars? I just didn't find it entertaining. I greatly appreciated it and thought the performances by both Larson and Tremblay were spot on. Tremblay especially is fantastic for someone only eight years old. But for me the film is too long and I found my attention drifting during the second half. This is really a two part film: life in the room and life out of the room. And that second half isn't quite what you'd expect. Do I recommend it as a very good film? Yes. Do I think you'll find it entertaining? All I can tell you is that I didn't. My guess is this will have limited appeal so I don't expect it to be here for an extended period.

There are no additional scenes once the credits begin. Screen size is unimportant. Theatre/Times.

The Finest Hours **½

Craig Gillespie directed this Action/Drama. Watch Preview. Cast: Chris Pine, Casey Affleck, Ben Foster, Holliday Grainger, John Ortiz, Eric Bana. Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of peril. Running time is one hour and fifty-seven minutes.

The remarkable true story of the greatest small boat rescue in Coast Guard history.

This is a reasonably exciting sea rescue saga set off the coast of New England in 1952. There's plenty of watery action intermixed with a love story I suspect was inserted to make it more enjoyable for women. Frankly, I thought that just got in the way and extended the length of the film unnecessarily. For those of us who lived through the 50s, a lot of the scenes will bring back memories of those years. The action is split between those on the shattered oil tanker (Affleck) and the small Coast Guard crew (Pine) attempting to rescue them. While the rescue does have action it's repetitive in nature and starts to lose its impact after awhile The end credits are interesting in that they show you pictures of the actual crews alongside the actors who portrayed them in the film. I saw this in the 2D version so I can't attest to the 3D quality, although it was not filmed in the 3D process.

There are no additional scenes once the credits begin. A large screen is a must. 2D Theatres/Times. 3D Theatres/Times.

Jane Got A Gun **

Gavin O'Connor directed this Western. Watch Preview. Cast: Natalie Portman, Joel Edgerton, Noah Emmerich, Rodrigo Santoro, Boyd Holbrook, Ewan McGregor. Rated R for violence and some language. Running time is one hour and thirty-eight minutes.

A woman (Portman) turns to her former fiancé (Joel Edgerton) for help in defending her family against a gang of outlaws.

Set in the years following the Civil War, this is a fairly traditional Western, but with a female hero (or heroine, take your pick). Production values are good as is the cast. I have a problem with Portman as the lead, however. Supposedly, the reason the outlaw gang is after her and the father of her child is they want her to be a prostitute in the town they've started. I've seen my share of Westerns and the women who portray prostitutes in them, and Portman, attractive as she is, does not fit the image of a buxom Wild West loose woman! If they needed working girls for the town I don't think they needed to send the gang scouring all over the West, risking life and limb, for a particular one. I also prefer a linear plot rather than one like this where we keep being sent back and forth before the parts come together. Other than those quibbles,Western fans should be right at home. I have to hope Europe is really fond of Westerns because they've fallen out of favor here and I doubt this will be around long enough to come close to earning its production costs.

There are no additional scenes once the credits begin. A large screen is preferable although all you're going to see in the expansive vistas is scrub brush and cactus. Theatre/Times.

Spotlight ****

directed this Drama. Watch Preview. Cast: Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams, Liev Schreiber, John Slattery, Stanley Tucci, Brian d'Arcy James, Billy Crudup. Rated R for some language including sexual references. Running time is two hours and eight minutes.

When a team of reporters delves into allegations of abuse in the Catholic Church, their year-long investigation uncovers a decades-long cover-up at the highest levels of Boston's religious, legal, and government establishment.

Even though this film is over two hours long, it will hold your attention throughout. Featuring a stellar cast in a true detective story, with pacing that keeps everything moving right along, I was actually sorry to see it draw to a close. I know the subject matter may prove uncomfortable for some, but it is what it is, and for the most part is handled as tastefully as possible. In case you haven't been paying attention to the Oscar nominations, this film has been nominated for six, including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Film Editing, and Best Director. Also,  Mark Ruffalo was nominated for Best Supporting Actor and Rachel McAdams was nominated for Best Supporting Actress. This is back as an encore presentation so don't expect it to stay around long. This is one of last year's best films and I recommend you catch it if at all possible.

There are no additional scenes after the credits begin. Screen size is unimportant. Theatres/Times.

Brooklyn ***½

directed this Drama. Watch Preview. Cast: Saoirse Ronan, Emory Cohen, Domhnall Gleeson, Jim Broadbent, Julie Walters. Rated PG - 13 for a scene of sexuality and brief strong language. Running time is one hour and fifty-one minutes.

Lured by the promise of America, a young Irish girl (Ronan) departs Ireland and the comfort of her mother’s home for the shores of New York City in the 1950's. After a bout of homesickness, she finds romance and a sense of belonging, but a tragedy in Ireland forces her to make difficult life choices.

I don't normally care for dramas of this type but I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Ronan is excellent as the young woman in a strange land and she's aided by a strong supporting cast, although Broadbent will probably be the only familiar face. I found it interesting to revisit the 50s, with the familiar cars and lifestyles of that time. The characters are well drawn, the story is interesting, the production values are very good, and the pacing is such that you're never bored. I don't know that a younger audience will find this as interesting, but I feel confident in recommending this film strongly to senior film patrons. Don't put off seeing this, however, as I can't imagine this encore presentation will be here long.

There are no additional scenes once the credits begin. Screen size is unimportant. Theatres/Times.

Worthwhile (or not) 1/15/16

MetaCritic indicates 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi (49) is the top ranking film this week, followed by Ride Along 2 (32), and Norm Of The North (24). There are also two encore presentations this week: Brooklyn (87) and Spotlight (93). I saw both of the encores and thought each was far above average. For national reviews take the link to the MetaCritic website for each film by clicking on the titles above.

The Revenant **

Alejandro G. Iñárritu directed this.Historical Adventure film. Watch Preview. Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Domhnall Gleeson, Will Poulter. Rated R for strong frontier combat and violence including gory images, a sexual assault, language and brief nudity. Running time is two hours and thirty-six minutes.

An 1820s explorer (Leonardo DiCaprio) is brutally attacked by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team. Guided by sheer will and the love of his family, he endures a vicious winter in a relentless effort to survive long enough to find those who abandoned him.

This is a beautifully photographed, realistic looking frontier adventure whose pacing is so slow it eventually becomes a bore. Those willing to sit through its excessive length should have a strong stomach because when I say realistic, that's what I mean. You get to see a horse gutted to provide shelter from a blizzard. You get to watch a freshly caught fish eaten squirming and raw, and you get to see an animal's flesh hacked from its body and eaten raw. I'm sure that probably happened during that era, but I don't personally find it entertaining to watch. The whole film is gloomy and downbeat without a single bit of laughter to break the depressive atmosphere. This may well end up winning some awards, but it's sure no fun to watch.

There are no additional scenes once the credits begin. A large screen is best. Theatres/Times.

Carol **

directed this Drama. Watch Preview. Cast: Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Sarah Paulson, Kyle Chandler, Jake Lacy, Cory Michael Smith. Rated R for a scene of sexuality/nudity and brief language. Running time is one hour and fifty-eight minutes.

Two women (Blanchett, Mara) from very different backgrounds find themselves in an unexpected love affair in 1950s New York.

Basically, this is an artsy soap opera. It's nice to look at and features two top actresses. I enjoyed hearing the music of the 50s and seeing the cars of that era. But the plot moves at a snail's pace and there's so little happening it's hard to stay interested.. This could easily been cut to ninety minutes, which would have made it much more palatable. Lest you think this is just a male's reaction to a female love affair, my wife watched this with me and she was as unimpressed as I was. If you enjoy art films or soap operas, fine. But if it's entertainment you're seeking, look elsewhere.

There are no additional scenes once the credits begin. Screen size is unimportant. Theatres/Times.
